February is National Children’s Dental Health Month! This year, the American Dental Association is promoting the benefits of dental sealants throughout this month-long celebration. Kentucky Oral Health Coalition (KOHC) is teaming up with professionals, parents, and members of the community to teach children about the importance of good oral health habits, how to practice oral hygiene, and how maintaining oral health can lead to improved overall health.

Good oral health habits can prevent cavities, maintain a healthy mouth, and prevent gum disease. Children can practice good oral hygiene by:

  • Brushing their teeth for two minutes, twice per day using fluoride toothpaste after waking up and before going to bed.
  • Flossing their teeth once per day, usually before bed. Watch this video from Colgate to learn how to properly floss. Parents can print off a calendar from MouthHealthy to keep kids on track with daily brushing and flossing.
  • Replacing their toothbrush every three to four months. Always replace a toothbrush if the bristles have worn out or they have been sick.
  • Eating healthy foods and avoiding sugary drinks, instead choose fluoridated tap water to help prevent cavities.

Dental providers, healthcare workers, and educators can participate in National Children’s Dental Health Month and promote dental hygiene among children by using the American Dental Association’s planning guide and resources such as posters, activity sheets, and games available in English and Spanish.

As we celebrate National Children’s Dental Health Month, KOHC will be focusing on a different oral health topic each week. Be sure to check back each week for new resources and information!

KOHC encourages you to participate in this annual celebration with your dentist, dental hygienist, children, friends, and members of your community to promote good oral health in children and bring plenty of smiles for years to come.
