June marks not only the start of summer but also National Oral Health Month! From sleeping in on lazy mornings to busy days on vacation, at camp, or playing sports, maintaining consistent oral hygiene can become a challenge. But keeping your mouth healthy doesn’t have to interrupt the fun. Follow these tips to enjoy a summer of healthy smiles.

Keep Kids’ Smiles Healthy on Summer Break

Summer break can throw off school-time routines, but healthy habits don’t have to take a vacation! Make sure kids clean their teeth at least twice a day, even if mornings start later or bedtime is delayed.

Tips

  • Offer healthy snacks for camps and playdates like fresh fruit, veggies, cheese, or yogurt.

  • Swap soda for fruit infused water or a kid friendly smoothie.

Hydration and the Summer Sun

Staying hydrated isn’t just for cooling down, it helps prevent dry mouth, reduces cavities, and keeps breath fresh. For most summer activities, water is all you need. Sports drinks aren’t necessary for casual play and can be high in sugar.

Tips

  • Drink water regularly, especially in hot weather. Eating hydrating fruits and veggies, like watermelon, can also help.

  • Use lip balm with SPF and reapply after eating or drinking to protect delicate lips from sun damage.

Travel-Friendly Oral Health Tips

Summer is often a time for road trips, cruises, and camping. Remember to pack your oral hygiene supplies before leaving for your next adventure.

Tips

  • Pack a compact dental kit: toothbrush, toothpaste, floss, and mini mouthwash.

  • Keep any retainers or biteguards in a safe place

  • Include a basic dental emergency kit with temporary dental cement  to secure a loose crown or filling and pain relievers.

  • Brush after meals when possible, or rinse with water and chew sugar-free gum if brushing isn’t practical.

Schedule a Summer Checkup

A dental visit before summer travels can catch small issues before they become big problems and help you relax while enjoying your break.

Tips

  • Consider a dental exam and cleaning before traveling and definitely before the busy school season starts.

  • Five to six year old children entering public schools must have a dental screening completed. The Kentucky Dental Hygienists’ Association will offer a free kindergarten screening on June 27th.

Celebrate National Oral Health Month by making oral care fun, simple, and part of your summer lifestyle. With a few proactive steps, you can keep your family smiling all season long!
