April is Child Abuse Prevention Month, an important time to remember that everyone has a role to play in keeping communities safe for kids to grow and thrive. Oral health professionals are in a unique position to recognize and report signs of abuse and neglect as it is estimated that nearly 50% of injuries occur on the head and neck. Throughout the month of April, KOHC continues our partnership with Delta Dental of Kentucky and the Face It Movement to recognize Child Abuse Prevention Month.

According to findings within the latest national Child Maltreatment Report, Kentucky no longer has the highest child victimization rate in the nation. Among all 50 states, Kentucky now has the 5th highest rate of child maltreatment as opposed to its number 1 spot in 2019. While this trend is noteworthy, there are many factors that influence these numbers and it is important to continue identifying risk factors and promoting policies and programs that will boost Kentucky’s efforts to protect its children and support its families.

During the month of April, Face It will be hosting a series of events and trainings, sharing free resources for parents, caregivers, community members, and professionals, promoting child safety tips and family engagement ideas, and more! See below for an overview of the month and take these steps during Child Abuse Prevention Month.
