Throughout the month of April KOHC has been partnering with Delta Dental of Kentucky and the Face It Movement to recognize Child Abuse Prevention Month. We know that keeping kids safe is an adult responsibility and oral health professionals are in a unique position to recognize and report signs of abuse and neglect as it is estimated that nearly 50% of injuries occur on the head and neck.

This month, KOHC launched a new toolkit to ensure oral health and all health professionals feel confident in their ability to talk to parents, recognize signs of abuse and neglect, and appropriately report concerns. The toolkit provides health and oral health professionals with resources and information on educating parents and caregivers on appropriate developmental milestones and having a plan when things get difficult, empowering staff with information on building relationships with families and how to recognize signs of maltreatment, and what to do if see signs of abuse or neglect arise, including examples in practice and team intervention techniques.

Health professionals can view the toolkit online or access a downloadable version to reference in their office along with other free materials from Face It for their office and patients.

In addition, oral health professionals can access more Child Abuse Prevention Month materials and resources from Face It. To continue our work to equip oral health professionals with the tools they need to keep kids safe, KOHC will host two more Pediatric Abusive Head Trauma trainings in 2021 with dates coming soon.

Join KOHC in ensuring everyone plays a role in preventing child maltreatment and keeping kids safe.
