As we welcomed colder days and holiday spirit, KOHC also recognized Antibiotic Awareness Week in November, a week highlighting the role of health professionals, as well as consumers in antibiotic stewardship and responsible practices for prescribing.
Antibiotics are a commonly used medication to prevent and mitigate infections throughout the body – and are often prescribed by primary care and emergency doctors, as well as dental professionals. While the use of antibiotics is common, they can cause side effects and contribute to the development of antimicrobial resistance – or infections that do not respond to drugs designed to kill them.
Oral surgery and other dental treatments, as well as poor dental hygiene can result in infections in the mouth and put patients at risk of adverse outcomes. However, the use of antibiotics in these cases should be evaluated for clinical necessity before prescribing.
Dentists and other dental professionals should take steps to ensure responsible prescribing practices and educate patients when prescriptions are appropriate.
- Review available resources on antibiotic resistance and action steps for safe prescribing.
- Utilize tools from the American Dental Association (ADA) about the use of antibiotics in dental settings.
- Engage in patient education when antibiotics are used to ensure patients understand the purpose and importance of following clinical guidelines.
KOHC encourages dentists and oral health professionals across the state to join us in recognizing the importance of antibiotic stewardship and responsible prescribing.
