As we ring in the new year, KOHC is excited to begin our work advocating for policies that support optimal oral health for all. At the December Annual Meeting, Coalition members voted on the policy agenda for the 2023 Kentucky General Assembly, prioritizing the following efforts:  

  • Protect community water fluoridation programs by ensuring understanding of the importance of these programs as a preventive dental and public health measure  
  • Reduce youth vaping and tobacco use by establishing a statewide tobacco retail license that ensure retailers are selling tobacco products only to those 21 years and older   
  • Support maternal mental health by requiring postpartum depression screenings at appointments after birth  
  • Support efforts to positively impact the dental workforce 

With the General Assembly kicking off the 2023 session this week, KOHC is highlighting ways to get involved and support the Coalition’s policy agenda. Advocates can take action throughout the session. Check out these 5 ways to ensure you are prepared to advocate for KOHC’s priorities during the 2023 legislative session:  

  1. Look up who represents you in Frankfort and how to contact your state Senator and Representative, as well as information on bills, committee schedules and agendas, research reports, and more from the Legislative Research Commission. Redistricting and the 2022 election brought several changes for many Kentuckians.   
  2. Bookmark Kentucky Youth Advocates’ 2022 Kentucky General Assembly Bill Tracker webpage so you can stay up-to-date on bills (It will go live in the coming weeks!).  
  3. Sign up for updates about the 2023 Children’s Advocacy Week on February 6-10, featuring virtual events throughout the week and in-person events at the Capitol on February 8th.  
  4. Join Kentucky Youth Advocates as they discuss how to prepare for Children’s Advocacy Week, including an overview of events during the week and updates on key policies to discuss with legislators. REGISTER for the Prep Webinar on February 1st, 2023 at 10:00 – 11:00 AM ET.  
  5. Check out the latest KIDS COUNT County Data Book to see how kids are faring across Kentucky and in your county.  
  6. Follow us on social media (Facebook and Twitter) as we share news and updates on what is happening in Frankfort throughout the session and action alerts to get involved.
